William J. Sims President and CEO
Mr. Sims is a proven leader with nearly 30 years of experience growing both emerging and established companies in multiple technology and product sectors. He most recently served as President and CEO of Color Kinetics, the company largely credited for pioneering the intelligent LED illumination market. In his seven-year tenure he guided the company to profitability, achieved 30% annual growth on average, and oversaw its successful IPO, secondary offering and eventual sale to Philips for $800 million in 2007. Prior to Color Kinetics, Mr. Sims held senior leadership positions at Zenith, JVC and e-SIM. He holds a BA in Biological Sciences from California State University, Fullerton.
Troy J. Campione Senior Vice President, Corporate Development
Dr. Campione leads business development strategy and execution for Joule, including prospective partnership and development agreements across multiple markets. His extensive background in the fields of biotech and cleantech spans more than 20 years. Prior to Joule, Dr. Campione served as Senior Vice President of Business Development for Solazyme, a developer of algal-derived biofuels and other products. He previously spent more than six years at Symyx Technologies as GM and Vice President of Collaborations, Alliances and Licensing, and 15 years at ExxonMobil in a variety of business, operations and technology leadership roles across a range of Exxon's energy and chemical technologies. Dr. Campione holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, and ME and BS degrees in Chemical Engineering from Tulane University.
David Johnson Senior Vice President, Finance
Mr. Johnson has 25 years of financial management experience overseeing the needs of early-stage and technology companies. He was previously CFO of Color Kinetics, where he led the finance organization for 11 years; from its pre-revenue start-up stage through IPO and acquisition. Prior to Color Kinetics, Mr. Johnson was CFO at Aimtech Corporation, a developer of software tools for interactive learning applications. He began his career as a CPA with Arthur Andersen & Co. Mr. Johnson received a BA in Economics from the College of the Holy Cross and an MS in Accounting from Northeastern University.
Fritz Morgan Senior Vice President, Engineering and Manufacturing
Mr. Morgan is a seasoned leader of engineering teams and processes with more than 15 years of industrial experience crossing multiple technology sectors. Prior to Joule, he was Chief Technology Officer of Color Kinetics, where he spent 11 years leading the development of the company's award-winning product lines, technologies and market applications, and contributed to many of its core patents. Following its acquisition, Mr. Morgan supervised LED system development across multiple international R&D centers for Philips Lighting. Prior to Color Kinetics, Mr. Morgan was a research scientist at Mitsubishi Electric Research Lab, where he developed surgical simulators. He holds a BS in Physics and an MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon with a focus in robotics.
Dan Robertson Senior Vice President, Biological Sciences
As Senior Vice President of Biological Sciences, Dr. Robertson has led the bioscience efforts at Joule since its inception in 2007. Prior to Joule, he served as Director of Enzymology at Diversa Corporation and as Vice President of Biofuels R&D for Verenium, where he led the development of microbial strains for cellulosic ethanol production. In addition to his 14 years of industrial experience, Dr. Robertson also has a 14-year academic background focused on the energetics of membrane transport and photosynthesis. He received his PhD degree in Biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh.
Peter D. Karol Vice President and General Counsel
Mr. Karol supervises all aspects of Joule's legal strategy, including business agreements, litigation management, intellectual property, regulatory and labor and employment. He was previously General Counsel at Color Kinetics through its acquisition. Prior to Color Kinetics, he spent five years at Lycos, Inc., an online portal, where he rose to the position of General Counsel. Prior to Lycos, Mr. Karol was Deputy General Counsel for publicly traded and privately held healthcare companies. He began his legal career in New York City as a corporate associate at Sullivan & Cromwell. Mr. Karol holds a BS in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a JD from Columbia Law School.
